Award-Winning Japanese Sake "KOI": A Fusion of Design and Tradition

Aya Codama's Unique Packaging Design Inspired by Japan's Iconic Koi Fish

Japanese Sake "KOI", a product of Imayotsukasa Sake Brewery, is not just a beverage but a work of art. The package design, inspired by the beauty and elegance of Japan's iconic Koi fish, is a testament to the fusion of traditional artistry and modern design techniques. This article delves into the creative process and unique features of this award-winning design.

The design of the "KOI" Sake bottle and box is the brainchild of Aya Codama from BULLET Inc. The inspiration for this project was to create a design that represents Japan, and the Koi fish, often referred to as a "living jewel", was chosen as the motif. Niigata, the home of Imayotsukasa Sake Brewery, is also renowned for Koi breeding, further strengthening the connection between the product and its design inspiration.

The unique properties of the design lie in its representation of the Koi fish. The red patterns, reminiscent of the beautiful markings on a Koi fish, are directly printed on the white porcelain bottle, which is shaped to resemble the fish. The outer box is cut out in the silhouette of a Koi, visually emphasizing the theme. The red patterns are created using Japanese brush stroke techniques, adding a traditional touch to the modern design.

The realization of this design required sophisticated technology. The red patterns were printed directly on the curved white porcelain bottle, a process that required high precision and skill. The box features gold foil hot stamping, adding a touch of luxury to the packaging. The bottle is a standard 720ml Japanese sake bottle, while the box measures 90mm in width, 90mm in depth, and 310mm in height.

The design also offers an interactive experience. The vividly designed package not only stands out in the store but also serves as a decorative piece after the Sake is consumed. The design remains intact even after washing, allowing the bottle to be reused. Distributed widely in Japan and overseas, this special Sake makes an excellent gift.

The project, which was completed in May 2015 in Japan, faced several challenges. Printing on the curved porcelain bottle required a high level of technical expertise. The process was time-consuming and required multiple trials to achieve the desired result. However, the effort was worthwhile, resulting in a product that truly embodies the beauty of the Koi fish.

The design of the "KOI" Sake bottle and box has garnered recognition for its innovation and artistry. It was awarded the Platinum A' Packaging Design Award in 2016, a prestigious accolade that recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs. This award is a testament to the design's contribution to advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
